The Geopark Grevena- Tethys is committed to ultimately achieving membership in the European and Global Geopark Network.
The aim of Geopark team is to document the park area as a geoheritage site that requires international recognition for the following reasons:
to preserve the unique sites of historic geologic research.
to promote further geoscientific research with emphasis on the relation of geologic and exceedingly rare environmental foundations;
to weave the cultural/anthropological history of the area to its geologic foundations; to develop a sustainable geotouristic attraction capable of increasing visitation, strengthening the local economy, and providing jobs in the region.

FAETHON OLYMPUS MARATHON 2015 - "Run the skies"

This is the 4th year for this major sporting event taking place at Mt. Olympus in Greece. Athletes from Greece and abroad got together July 12, 2015 to compete with time and themselves. Starting point was Kokkinopilos village in Elassona Thessaly. It is indeed a very demanding race called "Faethon Olympus Marathon" with a total route 44 km and an altitude difference 3.500m . For 30 km, runners have to push themselves to achieve time and durability in an altitude of 2000mt above sea level. Their reward is an extraordinary view of this blessed amazing and mythical mountain.

The race is organized by the Faethon Olympus Marathon and Thanasis Pitenis
Who was Phaethon

PHAETHON was a young son of Helios and Klymene who begged his father to let him drive the chariot of the sun. The Sun-god reluctantly conceded to the boy's wishes and handed him the reigns. However, the inexperienced Phaethon quickly lost control of the immortal steeds, and the sun-chariot veered out of control setting the earth aflame, scorching the plains of Africa to desert. Zeus was appalled by the destruction and struck the boy from the chariot with a thunderbolt, hurling his flaming body into the waters of the river Eridanos. His sisters, the Heliades, gathered on the banks, and in their mourning with transformed into amber-teared poplar trees.

After his death Phaethon was placed amongst the stars as the constellation Auriga ("the Charioteer"), or else transformed into the god of the star which the Greeks called Phaethon--the planet Jupiter or Saturn. The name Phaethon means "the shining" or "radiant one," derived from the verb phaethô, "to shine."

XΤΥΠΟΥΝ ΤΗΝ ΠΟΡΤΑ ΔΕΚΑΤΡΕΙΣ
Την 11η Ιουλίου 2015 επέλεξε ο τηλεοπτικός οργανισμός Ellopia Media Group, για την παγκόσμια προβολή του τεκμηριογραφήματος "Χτυπούν την πόρτα 13". Τόσο η ημέρα όσο και η ώρα της πρώτης διαδικτυακής προβολής επιλέχθηκαν συμβολικά μια και τέσσερα χρόνια μετά το φονικό γεγονος, κανένας υπεύθυνος για τον θάνατο 13 ανθρώπων και τον τραυματισμό περισσότερων απο 75, δεν έχει αναλάβει τις ευθύνες του.
"Είναι ο δικός μας φόρος τιμής, στους δεκατρείς και τις οικογένειες τους. Το δικό μας κεράκι στον καθένα ξεχωριστά, με την ευχή να τιμωρηθούν παραδειγματικά οι ένοχοι. Η λήθη φέρνει την επανάληψη και ο ελληνισμός δεν έχει περιθώρια να χάνει κι άλλα παλληκάρια του...."
